Why is Belgian chocolate famous even though cacao bean originate from South America?

Although cacao originated in South America, chocolate as we know it was invented in Europe. Many European countries make great chocolate but Belgium and Switzerland are most famous. One of the main reasons that Belgian chocolate is famous is that a fellow called Jean Neuhaus invented praline in 1818. Praline basically means that a hard chocolate shell called couverture is filled with a softer filling which allows the chocolatier to introduce a range of flavours into their product. This could be rum or fruit or nuts or really anything that compliments the flavour of chocolate. Over the years the chocolatiers of Belgium have perfected the praline and continue to come up with exciting new fillings.

When I gooled chocolate mousse, I got 9,800,000 results. Belgian chocolate mousse got 144,000 results when googled.

Almost any chocolate confectioner. For cheap, try a drug store, or check the big box stores.

So? 1/2 the world eats Belgium chocolate.
Some are very good and some brands are so-so.
( Just like everywhere else).
Although Belgium is noted for their chocolate boutique shops, the chocolate they export
is not better than the Venezuelan ( El Ray Brand) or the French ( Valrhona).
Godiva is NOT made in Belgium anymore and Neuhaus is expensive and not great.
Duc D’or is OK.
I do however love Barry Callebeaut because he believes in Free Trade and supports the poor cocoa farmer in other countries. He willing pays a higher price and he sells his chocolate very reasonable.
For that reason, I support Callebeaut Belgium chocolate( it’s also the best bang for the buck).
It’s usually found in bulk in stores like Trader Joe’s ,Whole Foods and boutique gourmet markets.

Quite cheap on Ebay and thorntons do it too (about 4 quid i think)

Used both before and no problems to report

BTW – you can just use normal chocolate and add some more oil to it when its melted to make it flow, used that too and worked well!

I mail-ordered some french chocolates online(and they were shipped from France,too), they
were very very expensive, but somehow I couldn’t quite see that it’s better than the belgian chocolates I had from a local chocolatier where I used to live here in the states. Just want to hear how others feel about it.

I love belgian chocolate. It is my absolute favorite.

The incredible thing is that I planned it out completely by using Cinemek’s “Hitchcock” on my iphone. It saved a ton of time and I was able to deliver a full fledged storyboard while meeting with the client.

Technical Info:
Shot on a Sony PMW-EX1 with a Letus Elite. I used the Zeiss 28mm 2.8, 50mm 1.4, 85mm 1.4, and the Nikkor 105mm 2.8. Zacuto baseplates, rods, and supports were also used.

All tracking shots were conducted using an Indi-Slider.
